Exam weights, eligibility, and subjects

Taken from the four 2027 posters. The weights are the same in Boston and Somerville.

2027 Senior and Principal Fire Alarm Operator exam weights and eligible titles
ExamEligible titleWeights
Senior Fire Alarm OperatorFire Alarm Operator48% Technical Knowledge, 32% Situational Judgment, 20% ECT&E
Principal Fire Alarm OperatorSenior Fire Alarm Operator44% Technical Knowledge, 36% Situational Judgment, 20% ECT&E
  • You must be an employee of that fire department with permanent civil service status in the eligible title by the exam date, with at least one year of service since appointment performing that title's duties.
  • Under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 31, Section 59, the exam is postponed if fewer than two applications are received from eligible candidates, unless the eligible title has been lowered to the entry-level rank.
  • Candidates placed on the eligible list can be certified for a period set by the administrator, not to exceed two years unless the statute or the HRD revocation policy provides otherwise.
  • The postings list knowledge areas including each station's response district, fire-related terminology, departmental organization, administrative procedures, current technologies, and the transmission, switching, and operation of telecommunications systems. The Principal posting adds business and management principles.
  • The Situational Judgment Test evaluates judgment and decision-making, accountability, adaptability, leadership (including managing activities, building teams, and developing others), and interpersonal skills including conflict management.

The listed duties center on dispatch work: using the Computer-Aided Dispatch system, receiving and prioritizing 911 and non-emergency calls, dispatching and coordinating personnel, monitoring several phone lines, and relaying information by radio during emergencies.

Veterans and disabled veterans receive two points on the passing score on submission of proof. The examination fee is not refunded unless HRD cancels the exam.

The mandatory ECT&E claim

ECT&E stands for Experience, Certification, Training & Education. The official page states that filing the claim is a mandatory examination component and that a candidate who does not complete it receives a failing score.

  • Supporting documentation is accepted up to seven calendar days after the written examination date, by email to civilservice@mass.gov.
  • After you receive your score, check that your submitted documents support your claim.
  • Appeals must be filed within seventeen calendar days from the date the score notice was sent.

Steps from the official page

  1. Review the materials on the reading list.
  2. Apply beginning December 8, 2026. Your application is not complete until you receive both confirmation emails, one for the application and one for payment.
  3. A notice to appear is emailed about two weeks before the exam and tells you where and when to appear.
  4. File your ECT&E claim before the written exam date.
  5. Results are sent by email. Candidates can view their ranking once the eligible list is established.

What the reading lists contain (published August 5, 2026)

There is a separate reading list for each of the four titles. Each states that all technical knowledge examination questions will be based on the listed materials, and that only the chapters and sections shown under each item are included. Which items appear depends on the department, so the two Boston lists and the two Somerville lists are different.

Boston Senior and Principal

  • NFPA 1225, Standard for Emergency Services Communications (2022 edition), selected chapters
  • MetroFire Operational Plan (Rev. 2.05, 2025), selected sections
  • Boston Fire Department box cards, Associated Geography of Boston, and Fire Alarm Response and Notification Checklist
  • Rules and Regulations of the Boston Fire Department (June 2026)
  • Standard Operating Procedures of the Boston Fire Department, Progressive Discipline Guidelines (November 2025), and Appendix F, Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace

Somerville Senior and Principal

  • NFPA 1225, Standard for Emergency Services Communications (2022 edition), selected chapters
  • Critical Incident Management: A Complete Response Guide, 2nd edition, 2012 (CRC Press), selected chapters
  • MetroFire Operational Plan (Rev. 1.04, 2026), selected sections
  • Massachusetts Response 2026
  • Somerville Running Cards (July 3, 2026) and the Somerville PURVIS VOC Alarm System SOG, V4

Several items are department documents, so the Somerville list says to check the Somerville Fire Department share drive for some of them. Chapter-level inclusions and exclusions are in the official lists.

  • The exam creates an eligible list for Fire Alarm Operator vacancies in the participating departments. Candidates must pass to be placed on it.
  • The poster says the exam tests reading comprehension, interpretation, and related skills, and that all information needed to answer the questions will be in a preparation guide on the Civil Service website. The official page lists that guide as coming soon.
  • Listed abilities include understanding filing and records retention methods, applying written directions, street maps, and charts, extracting information from charts, tables, and dispatch protocols, and reading policies and procedures to generate records of service requests.
  • The fee may be waived for candidates who received certain public assistance or unemployment insurance in the year before the exam. Candidates may claim credit for Fire Alarm Operator employment or experience during the application period, with documentation, and it counts only if they pass.
  • The poster also lists veterans, disabled veterans, and bilingual selective certification preferences.
