USA Hire Occupational Reasoning assessment
OPM describes the Occupational Reasoning assessment as a measure of how well you identify logical relationships and draw correct conclusions from information. This page covers what OPM says and gives you six original practice items with explanations.
Not official USA Hire questions
What OPM says
- What it measures: your ability to identify logical relationships and analyze information to make correct inferences or conclusions.
- Competency: Reasoning, which OPM defines as identifying rules, principles, or relationships that explain facts, data, or other information, and analyzing information to make correct inferences or draw accurate conclusions.
OPM's preparation tips for this assessment:
- Have scratch paper and a writing utensil ready.
- Read the prompts and questions carefully.
- Pay attention to common or repeated terms.
- Note which statements are facts and which are possibilities.
- Organize the information with lists or visuals.
Take the six-question reasoning practice test
Choose timed or untimed, flag questions to revisit, and see an explanation for every answer when you finish. After each one, ask which words in the prompt decided it: an "all," a "some," a "may," or an "if." Those words are where most wrong conclusions come from.

Habits that help (general guidance)
General guidance from CivilServiceExam.org, not official
- Restate the rule in your own words before you read the answer choices.
- Mark every quantifier: all, some, none, at least, only.
- Treat an answer that adds a cause, a reason, or a result the prompt never stated as suspect.
- For ordering questions, write the items in order on scratch paper and check each clue against your list.
OPM's official practice version gives no feedback or score, so use it to get comfortable with the format, then use items like these to see why an answer is right. See the practice test guide and the USA Hire overview.
