Federal hiring assessments

USA Hire practice tests

The most accurate USA Hire practice is OPM's own. This page shows where it is, what it does and does not give you, and how to add practice with explanations alongside it.

OPM's official practice assessments

OPM's Applicant Resource Center offers these practice assessments:

  • Early Career Talent Assessment
  • Occupational Interaction Assessment
  • Occupational Reading Assessment
  • Occupational Reasoning Assessment
  • Occupational Judgment Assessment
  • Occupational Math Assessment
  • Federal Supervisor Assessment (supervisory)
  • They show the types of questions and the look and feel of the real assessments.
  • They are shorter than the actual assessments and do not cover every possible question.
  • You do not learn whether an answer was correct, and you do not receive a score.
  • You can take any of them as many times as you like.
  • OPM says that if a practice assessment is not listed, it does not exist.

How to use them

  1. Find out which assessments your application needs. Use your assessment notification, or match the competencies in the job announcement to the practice assessments. Our overview explains both methods.
  2. Take them on the device and in the place you will use. OPM recommends this to replicate the real experience.
  3. Decide on any accommodation before starting the real assessments. OPM says that if the practice tests lead you to believe you need a reasonable accommodation, do not begin the actual assessments. Request the accommodation first.

Not official USA Hire questions

Because OPM's practice gives no feedback, these items add the explanation. They are original and unofficial general reading and math items, not USA Hire questions, and they do not predict a score.
