Housing Inspector civil service exams test housing and property-maintenance code knowledge, inspection documentation requirements, and judgment around tenant and landlord interactions. The job may involve complaint response, habitability conditions, illegal occupancy, heating and ventilation, plumbing, sanitation, or emergency hazards depending on the agency.
Expect reading comprehension of code and procedure passages, violation-rate and fee math, conditional enforcement rules, and situational judgment covering access, safety hazards, evidence, and integrity. A strong answer usually follows the stated rule, documents the observable condition, and uses the proper correction or escalation step rather than improvising.
Housing inspection is not the same as residential building inspection. Some postings emphasize rental-code enforcement and re-inspections, while others emphasize permits, plans, structural systems, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or energy codes. Use the active local bulletin and code references to decide which version applies to you.
For review, separate a knowledge miss from a documentation miss. If you knew the condition but selected the wrong notice, skipped a required report detail, or ordered the steps incorrectly, the fix is procedure practice rather than more memorization.
