Federal hiring assessments

USA Hire Judgment and Interaction assessments

These two assessments are different from reading, reasoning, and math. They ask how you would decide and what you prefer at work, so there is no answer key to memorize. This page explains what OPM says each one measures and how to prepare sensibly.

Why there are no practice questions here

OPM tells applicants to choose answers that honestly reflect how they respond. Practice items with a "right answer" would suggest something the assessment does not ask for, so we do not offer them.

Occupational Judgment

  • What it measures (OPM): how you make decisions in common workplace situations involving colleagues, customers, and others.
  • Competency: Decision Making, defined by OPM as making sound, well-informed, and objective decisions, perceiving the impact and implications of decisions, and committing to action even in uncertain situations to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Format note from OPM's tips: read the question or prompt carefully and watch the video before selecting an answer.

OPM's tips for this assessment are to read thoroughly, be honest, and not overthink: choose answers that genuinely represent you.

Occupational Interaction

OPM says this assessment measures multiple competencies related to personal characteristics such as attitudes, interests, and preferences that are important in the workplace. The competencies OPM lists:

Flexibility
Is open to change and new information, and adapts to changing conditions and ambiguity.
Learning
Uses effective techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills.
Stress Tolerance
Deals calmly and effectively with high-stress situations such as tight deadlines or emergencies.
Customer Service
Works with clients and customers to assess their needs and resolve problems. Customers include the public, colleagues, and other agencies.
Integrity/Honesty
Maintains high standards of ethical conduct and is trustworthy.
Teamwork
Encourages cooperation and works with others to achieve goals.
Accountability
Accepts responsibility, sets priorities, and complies with established rules and control systems.
Attention to Detail
Is thorough and conscientious about details when performing work.
Interpersonal Skills
Treats others with courtesy, sensitivity, and respect and responds appropriately to their needs.
Self-Management
Sets realistic goals, shows initiative, and works with minimal supervision.

Definitions are paraphrased from OPM's Applicant Resource Center.

OPM's tips match the Judgment assessment: read thoroughly, be honest, and do not overthink.

How to prepare (general guidance)

General guidance from CivilServiceExam.org, not official

This is advice that may help. OPM does not publish scoring details for these assessments.
  • Take the official practice versions. They show the format, including the video prompts, so nothing about the layout surprises you. They give no feedback and no score.
  • Think about real examples before test day. Recall times you handled a deadline, a difficult customer, a mistake, or a change in plans. Honest, concrete recall makes consistent answers easier.
  • Do not try to guess a "best" profile. Answers that contradict each other across many items are easier to give if you are describing yourself than if you are performing.
  • Protect the conditions. Take the assessments rested, in a quiet place, on a reliable connection, and allow time for breaks between assessments.

We do not write assessment responses, application narratives, or personal statements for federal applications.
